75 Years Ago – May 18, 1944
New Sweden reaches goal — New Sweden was the first town in Aroostook County to reach its goal in the 1944 War Fund Drive, Clifford Anderson, New Sweden Red Cross War Fund chairman, announced yesterday. Not only did the town reach its quota of $775, but oversubscribed to the extent of $316.50. Total funds raised were $1,091.50, since the opening day of the drive on March 3.
Stockholm schools — The Stockholm schools closed on Friday for a week’s vacation so that the students might help the farmers during seed cutting and planting.
50 Years Ago – May 21 , 1969
Wig offer calls for scrutiny — Women receiving offers in the mail that they have “won” a wig would do well to think twice before responding, the Caribou Chamber of Commerce said today. The National Better Business Bureau, with which the Chamber is affiliated through membership, advises consumers that the offers frequently have strings attached.
Contest winners — The Annual Aroostook League Speaking Contest was held at Washburn District High School, the program including two speakers from each of the Aroostook League schools. The girls’ first-place winner was Miss Louise Smith of Presque Isle. The boys’ first-place winner was Robert Davis of Washburn.

Alumni group seeks grads — Plans are underway for an alumni banquet during Limestone’s 125th birthday celebration. The Limestone High School Alumni Banquet Committee is seeking graduates who have not registered for the banquet, to be held at 6 p.m. on July 2 at Limestone High School.
Prison Vote — The board of directors of the chamber voted unanimously at its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 11, to support the concept of locating a prison on Loring Air Force Base as part of the redevelopment efforts.
