Maine Department of Transportation planning several County construction projects

DYER BROOK, Maine — The Maine Department of Transportation has scheduled a road reconstruction project for a section of U.S. Route 2 in Dyer Brook.

The work area begins a little bit more than two miles north of Pond Road and extends approximately a mile and a half north to Keith Brook Road, according to Paul Merrill, public information officer for MDOT.

During the reconstruction period, crews may institute an alternating one-way traffic pattern to allow motorists to pass. The project is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 28, and end on Nov. 1.

McGillan Construction of Fort Fairfield is the contractor on this job.

The project is one of several that MDOT has planned in Aroostook County.

In Island Falls, crews will replace the deck and repair the substructure of the Randall Bridge, which carries Old Patten Road over the Mattawamkeag River. The bridge is just north of the Route 159 junction. During this work, traffic will be detoured using Shur Road. Northeast Paving of Presque Isle is the contractor on this job. The work is expected to be finished by Nov. 15.

In Hodgdon, a more elaborate project to replace the Hodgdon Mills bridge has hit a snag. According to Merrill, this project included the construction of an on-site detour, meaning a temporary roadway/bridge needs to be installed before demolition and construction of the new bridge can begin.

“The temporary detour/bridge is not designed by the department, but rather, by the contractor (Northeast Paving),” he said. “The contractor found that the bedrock at the site is much higher than they anticipated, so (they) had to stop working. The contractor has redesigned the temporary detour and resubmitted it to the department for review.”

Merrill added he anticipated work on the bridge detour would resume sometime next week. The work area will extend approximately 500 feet from the existing bridge in both directions (north and south). The estimated completion date of this work is June 20, 2020.
