HOULTON, Maine — The Maine State Police Troop F barracks in Houlton responded to 141 calls for service during the period of May 6-12, including the following.
May 6, 2019
AMITY: Cpl. Quint responded to a single-vehicle crash in Amity. A vehicle driving south on US Highway 1 had struck a moose and a 13-year-old passenger in the vehicle was injured. The boy and his mother had been driving home from Houlton when the moose came into the roadway. The head of the animal came through the windshield and the glass cut the boy’s face. He was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
SMYRNA: Sgt. Clark and Tr. Duff responded to a report of a vehicle driving south on Interstate 95 in the north bound lanes. Tr. Duff located the vehicle and attempted to stop it; however, the driver sped up and was driving more erratic. Troopers from Troop E closed the interstate in the Medway area to eliminate some traffic coming into the path of the vehicle. An investigation led troopers to Nashville Plantation, where the driver ran out of fuel. The man was telling his family that he had a gun and would fire on any law enforcement that approached him. Several troopers assisted Tr. Duff with arresting the man for driving to endanger, eluding a police officer, operating under the influence and other charges. Troopers eventually transported the man to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton. A third person had heard the man stating he was going to commit suicide by driving head-on into the first vehicle he came across. Miraculously, no one was injured during this incident.
MAPLETON: Tr. Casavant was working patrol and had occasion to stop a man from Mapleton. A registration check showed the plate was illegally attached. The man’s license was revoked and he was also charged for having no proof of insurance.

BLAINE: Tr. Kilcollins was transporting a man to jail when a pickup almost hit him head-on. Tr. Kilcollins notified Sgt. Clark, who was in the immediate area, and Sgt. Clark located the vehicle. After an investigation, it was discovered the man was driving an unregistered motor vehicle and his license was revoked. Sgt. Clark issued the man a criminal summons for operating after revocation, operating an unregistered vehicle, and a traffic summons for not having insurance. The vehicle was towed from the scene.
CARIBOU: Tr. Martin had information from another trooper about a man currently driving in Caribou under suspension. Tr. Martin observed the described man and stopped him in the parking lot of the courthouse. The man admitted to Tr. Martin he did not have a valid driver’s license. Further investigation revealed the man was in possession of methamphetamines, had current bail conditions, and had attached a fraudulent inspection sticker to his vehicle. Tr. Martin arrested the man for being in violation of his bail, drug charges, and for displaying a fictitious inspection certificate.

MASARDIS: Tr. Pescitelli and Tr. Adams were conducting traffic enforcement on Rt. 11 in Masardis. Tr. Pescitelli stopped a vehicle and found the operator had an active warrant for failing to appear in court and was also under suspension. Tr. Adams arrested the female and transported her to Ashland PD, where she made bail.
ORIENT: Tr. Adams and Tr. Saucier responded to a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Orient. A caller reported that the vehicle had passed them at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash. Investigation would show that the male operator was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Tr. Adams arrested the male for OUI.
MARS HILL: Sgt. Haines was on patrol monitoring traffic in Mars Hill when he had occasion to stop a car for no headlights after sunset. The male operator was under the influence of alcohol and was arrested. The test result was twice the legal limit and the Mars Hill man was charged for OUI and operating without a license, and taken to the ACJ.
FORT KENT and WALLAGRASS: Tr. Curtin was on patrol in Fort Kent when he had occasion to stop a Fort Kent man for an inspection violation. As a result Tr. Curtin charged him for expired registration over 150 days. Later in the evening Tr. Curtin stopped a St Francis man in Wallagrass for speeding and charged him with OAS.
May 12, 2019
ORIENT: Tr. Levesque and Sgt. Haines were called to Orient for an assault complaint. The original caller said he was confronted by a man in the roadway and threatened, so he punched the man. The second caller found the first man lying in the roadway with head injuries. Investigation showed troopers and the ambulance had been to the residence 10 days prior for a similar incident, but the male victim didn’t want to press charges. The man was issued a trespass warning during that initial incident. The injured man was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital via ambulance and later transferred to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle for admission. The man was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and assault. The investigation is ongoing.
SMYRNA: Tr. Cotton was conducting traffic enforcement in Smyrna and observed a vehicle with an expired inspection certificate. Tr. Cotton stopped the vehicle and during the course of the stop discovered the male driver had a suspended Maine driver’s license. The man said he paid the fine for a summons he was previously issued but eventually realized he did not pay the reinstatement fee. Tr. Cotton issued the man a traffic summons for OAS and helped him arrange to have a licensed driver come get him and his teenage daughter.
