HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton girls tennis team’s playoff run came to an abrupt end Wednesday as the Shires were eliminated from the postseason by visiting Orono.
Houlton, the No. 4 seed in Class C North, fell to Orono, 3-2 in a hard-fought match. The Red Riots were the No. 5 seed in the region. The Shires end their season with a 6-7 overall record, while Orono improves to 9-4 on the year.
The individual results from Wednesday’s quarterfinal, with Shires listed first, were: in singles, Sydney Lorom defeated Leah Costello, 6-2, 6-0; Maddie Grant beat Josie Veilleux, 6-0, 6-1; and Grace Johnson lost to Izzy Baker, 4-6, 3-6.
In doubles, Jamie Brown and Reagan Perfitt lost to Brynn Kennedy and Krista Bass, 1-6, 1-6; and Jillian Haggerty and Samantha Condon were beaten by Bailey Gifford and Celia Buetens, 1-6, 1-6.
