G.W. Shaw — G.W. Shaw of Caribou, who was with the U.S. Aviation Corps during the recent war, is now engaged in operating a flying machine as a business, giving passengers a trip at $10 per head.
75 Years Ago – May. 25, 1944
In charge of museum –Mrs. Faustina Oak has said she will be unable to continue to be in charge of the Nylander Museum. She will be replaced by Miss Annie Rideout during the month of June. The museum will continue to be open Sunday afternoon and evening. Mrs. Oak stated that considerable interest has been shown in the museum the last few Sundays bringing in a number of visitors from surrounding towns.
50 Years Ago – May 28, 1969
Area art on display — The winning paintings of the AAUW Area Children’s Art Exhibit went on display at Nylander’s Museum in Caribou Tuesday and will remain through Friday, June 6. Hours will be from 1-430 p.m. Monday through Friday. Over 40 ribbon winners by Caribou children are included in the exhibit, along with a large number from the area communities. This will be the last showing, after which the paintings will be returned to the schools.
Dollars for Scholars — The Limestone-Loring-Caswell Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation Chapter (Dollars for Scholars) concluded its fiscal year 1969 campaign with a successful door-to-door effort, and contributions from individuals, organizations and concerns. The executive officers, board of directors and the scholarship awards committee met recently and made the determination that $1,500 will be awarded to deserving students in the June Limestone High School commencement exercises. This year’s effort was a marked increase over the $1,000 awarded last year. A spirit of optimism was expressed by all chapter officers and it was felt that continuing efforts will lead to growth and potentially more and larger scholarships.
25 Years Ago – May 25, 1994
Katahdin Outreach — Katahdin Outreach, an organization which brings programs with hands-on activities to promote interest among school children in environmental science, made a presentation at the New Sweden Community Center Tuesday. Joining the New Sweden students for this presentation were the students from Stockholm School. Among the activities
were the use of compasses for elementary orienteering and the sharing of outdoor folk stories.
Swedish gift shop to open — Maines Swedish Colony Inc, will open its gift shop at the Capital School during Memorial Day Weekend, from noon to 4p.m. May 28, 29 and 30. For sale will be items imported from Sweden, Christmas items, and other decorative items of Swedish design. The shop will reopen June 25-26 and will remain open every succeeding weekend through Labor Day. Proceeds from the sales benefit the preservation and restoration of historical buildings in New Sweden.
