Teague Park School second-graders recently learned about responsible pet care from volunteers of Halfway Home Pet Rescue. Prior to HHPR’s visit, the students had conducted a school-wide penny drive, raising more than $440 for the rescue and its work to help homeless cats. At the front of the class are, from left, teacher Mary Theriault, HHPR president Norma Milton and HHPR volunteer Roy Chris Pinette. Milton told students their monetary gift would be used to provide emergency care for orphaned kittens. The second-grade class has done this fundraiser as a community project for the past seven years. As an added bonus, the students had the opportunity to visit with 8-week-old kittens Sammy and Sully, as well as Spunky, a recovering “miracle cat” who suffered severe injuries last winter.
