PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A two-day heatwave with temperatures approaching 90 degrees will start the long Independence Day weekend in northern Maine, according to the National Weather Service.
High temperatures of 87 and 88 are forecast for central Aroostook County on Thursday and Friday respectively, according to the National Weather Service office in Caribou.
During the July 4th holiday on Thursday, mostly sunny skies are expected with “inland temperatures making a run for 90,” according to the National Weather Service’s forecast preview on Facebook.
Friday also will be hot with temperatures nearing 90 in Aroostook County, the weather service said.
People attending area parades, fairs or outdoor events are urged to keep hydrated with water.
The short heatwave on the heels of recent rainfall should help farm fields and gardens catch up after a cool May and June.
The weekend will bring relief from the heat, with a cool front approaching Friday night along with the potential for showers and thunderstorms Friday night and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
High temperatures Saturday and Sunday will be about average for the season, with highs in the upper 70s in central Aroostook, according to the forecast.
