County nonprofits net $67,000 in MCF grants

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — The Aroostook County Committee of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded $67,369 in grants to 11 nonprofits throughout The County.  

Grant recipients include:

Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation, to enhance AWWF’s Youth on the Allagash initiative by integrating Allagash Explorer educational tools into the classroom and on trips: $5,000.

Aroostook Hospice Foundation, to purchase beds that will expand sleeping accommodations for patients and family members during their stay at the Aroostook House of Comfort: $7,165

Big Rock, to allow the Snow School to expand and increase the number of young people it reaches: $10,000

Four Seasons Trail Association, to improve grooming capacity and groom trails more efficiently for trail users: $10,000

Houlton Community Market: to increase the community’s access to farmers markets, especially families and low-income customers: $3,392

Limestone Development Foundation, to establish a learning center at the town library to educate residents on basic computer skills that will help them become more employable: $4,646

Northern Maine Growth Initiative, to increase the working population with immigrants and refugees and offer educational and employment opportunities to a more diverse population: $10,000

University of Maine at Presque Isle, to purchase a fan system for UMPI’s new 2,400-square-foot Zillman Family Greenhouse to be constructed in summer 2019: $5,156

Van Buren Resiliency Project, to educate the community about adverse childhood experiences and collaboratively develop resources that promote resiliency and combat adverse intergenerational effects: $9,900

Mainely Girls, to take the Mainely Girls Theater Company on tour to encourage other schools to create girls’ groups and inspire other girls: $2,000

Presque Isle Historical Society, to archive a donation of 48 volatile wax musical cylinders circa 1918 and preserve them for future generations: $110

The Aroostook County Fund is a permanent endowment that supports projects and nonprofits that strengthen communities in The County. Applications go through the foundation’s Community Building Grant Program to be reviewed by a committee of local leaders.
