ISLAND FALLS, Maine — The Fourth of July Flag tournament was again a great success. With over 40 golfers playing, U.S. flags were planted all over the course from the 15th green to the 2nd green.
In first place, finishing 15” from the cup on the second green was Steve Walker. He shot a career round of 82 and had 10 shots to carry over to use on holes one and two. Second spot went to his brother, Scot Walker who ended up in the hole on No. 1. Steve’s son Parker was in third, two feet from the hole on No. 1. Steve Merry was fourth at 27 feet from hole No. 1 and Bill Robinson rounded out the top five, 34 feet from the cup on the first hole.
Closest to the pin winners were No. 4 hole, Bill Dwyer at 22-feet, 6-inches; on No. 7, Alston Crandall at 5-11; on No. 11, Bill Robinson at 1-7; and on No. 16, Joe DePalo at 4-8.
There were three skins with Brandon McCarthy winning two with birdies on No. 2 and No. 7. The other one went to Bill Robinson with a birdie on No. 11, thanks to his nice tee shot on the par three.
Results from the Pairs and Spares Sunday scramble were as follows: 1st with a 32, Stu and Becky Kelly and Mike and Joy Ivey with birdies on four consecutive holes (5 through 8). In a tie for second with 37s were the team of Ted and Terry Pettengill and Brent and Candy Kelley; and Bev Osborn, Dick Kelley and Greg Gayne. Fourth place went to Ralph and Val Powers and John and Betty Smallwood with 38. In fifth, with a 39 were Tom Ryan, Andy Ivey, Jarice Kelley and Sarah Douglas.
The course is in excellent condition. The greens were top dressed Monday and have speeded up nicely.
