CARIBOU, Maine — Micmac Farms is preparing to host “Open Farm Day” this upcoming Sunday, an event slated to feature live music, a showcase of the farm’s aquaculture facility, and many family activities.
Micmac Farms Marketing Manager Jacob Pelkey said, “Open Farm Day is a Maine Department of Agriculture event very similar to Maine Maple Syrup Sunday,” adding that the farm will have “demonstrations and exhibits of our high tunnels, wind turbine, watershed conservation efforts, and native pollinator.”
Ten artisan vendors are slated to be on site along with representatives from other area farms, in addition to “live musical entertainment from a variety of guests.”
For children, Pelkey said the event will include an ongoing crafting table, coloring tables, a bounce house, and yard games.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the 1353 Presque Isle Road facility in Caribou, with a children’s water balloon toss scheduled for 11:30 a.m., a three legged race set for noon and a sack race set for 12:30 p.m.
In the afternoon, Micmac Farms will hold a men’s hay bale toss at 1 p.m. and a women’s skillet throw at 1:30 p.m. Prizes for the adult events are a fresh Maine brook trout and children winning their events will receive a half pint of jam.
A farmer’s market will take place for the entire duration of the five-hour event.
“Families will leave this event with an understanding of our farm’s promise not to use antibiotics or harmful chemicals, our impact on local food production, land-based aquaculture, and having had a positive hands-on experience at a Maine farm,” Pelkey said.
