HOULTON, Maine — A new king and queen were crowned at the 64th annual Houlton Peanut Carnival Thursday evening at the Gentle Memorial Building.

Zane Erickson, the son of Brian and Moriah Erickson, and Madeline Beals, daughter of Heather Beals and Garrett Henderson were selected as the 2019 King and Queen, based on votes conducted at the event.

Others competing for the crown were Caden Flewelling and Mattie Goodwin, ages 5-6; Patrick Crane and Alison Fagnant, ages 7-8; and Parker Hiscoe and Edy Michno, ages 9-10. Erickson and Beals represented the ages 11-13.

The peanut carnival once again drew a large crowd to the recreation center as youngsters played a variety of games, paying with peanuts and winning peanuts as prizes. For decades, the Houlton Recreation Department has closed out its summer “Just For Kids” program with the popular peanut carnival.

The tennis court area of the Gentle Memorial Building was overflowing with children as they eagerly waited their turn to play games such as ring toss, splash ball and the classic “Wheel of Prizes,” that has been one of the staples of the carnival for many years.
