HOULTON, Maine — Organizers of the seventh annual Wings and Wheels fly-in/cruise-in have pulled the plug on this year’s event.
Jane Torres, executive director for the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce, said the unfavorable weather forecast is to blame for the cancellation of the event, scheduled for all day Saturday, Aug. 10.
“I have been checking the weather forecast and when it changed to about 70 percent chance of rain for Saturday, I knew we had to cancel,” Torres said Friday morning. “The helicopter won’t be able to fly if the weather is bad. We just won’t get anyone to show up if it is raining.”
Skydiving had already been cancelled due to low sign-ups.
Because the event typically costs about $3,500 to put on each year, Torres added, it was too risky a proposition to hold the event and have nobody show up.
One activity, however, is still on for the day. The fly-in breakfast is still a go starting at 7 a.m. Sponsored by Katahdin Trust Company, a full complement of breakfast goodies will be available for people. There is no charge for the meal.
