CARIBOU, Maine — The Men’s Adult Softball League based out of Caribou wrapped up its season on Thursday, Aug. 16, with the County Boys battling it out against the Inglorious Batters for the 2019 Championship.
The County Boys held off a strong challenge from the Inglorious Batters to capture this year’s title.
The County Boys started the night coming right out of the winner’s bracket to play the Inglorious Batters, who moved on to the championship game from the loser’s bracket. The Inglorious Batters were the top team during the regular season and were strong from the start scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and adding another four in the second en route to a 16-5 victory to force a second, “winner take all” championship.
Flipping for home and away honors, the County Boys drew a little luck winning the home slot. Again, Inglorious Batters wasted no time scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. County Boys managed to get one run back, but the Inglorious Batters put up another four in the top second for the 8-1 lead.
The County Boys did not lay down, as they hit for a hot inning scoring eight runs in the bottom of the second to seize a 9-8 lead. The two teams traded leads for much of the game, but the County Boys needed a late-game rally to pull of the victory.
Trailing 20-18, County Boys’ Jordan Haines blasted a two-run home run even things up in the bottom of the seventh inning. Corey Dickinson followed with a hit and with one out, Sam Robertson roped a shot to the outfield while pinch runner Jon Noyes raced home for the game-winning run.
