HOULTON, Maine — What a wonderful week we had for golf this week. Crisp seasonal temps made playing a round while walking quite enjoyable. The rain we got just helps keep the course green. Very pleasant weather this coming week will just beg for more play.
Our last official tournament will be played on Saturday, Sept. 21. It is the Ryan Wright/ Elks four person Scramble. This tournament is always a fun nine holes and honors the memory of Ryan Wright, a long time member. Please call the Elks Lodge for more info and to sign up.
The Men’s Twilight League came to an exciting conclusion this week. The team of Dick York and Jamie York took on Manny Martinez and Mike Fleming on Friday. After struggling a little on the opening holes, the Yorks battled back to secure a tie after nine holes with a win on the last hole. After a tie on the first playoff hole, Dick and Jamie claimed victory on the second to become Champions this year. Congratulations to to all players.
The Ladies Association will have their closing dinner on Tuesday night. Call Holly Mcpartland to to be added to the guest list.
Our annual Cross Country Par Three Tournament was held on Sunday afternoon to benefit the Houlton Project Grad. For this game we turn our course into nine par three holes taking a cruise across the property to very untraditional locations. The winners were, after a chip off playoff, Brittany Benn, Sean Dolomont, Jane and Jerry York at 3-under. Second place went to Kayla and Manny Martinez, David Edgar, and Mike Fleming. Third place after a chip off was Martha and Mike Fasulo and Harriet and Bob Gray, at 2-under. Fourth went to Sharon O’ Donnell, Randy Lincoln, Brent Lincoln, and Bob McCarthy. The Lakeside Restaurant is open from Wednesday through Sunday for lunch and dinner. You can call Nancy at 694-9494 for your reservations. The Restaurant held a wonderful reception to honor Ann Callnan on Friday. Ann was a vibrant member of the community and will be missed by the many people who attended.
Here’s some good news. The Board of Directors has just approved this great deal. If you buy your membership for next year now at this years prices, new members can play the rest of this year as well with no additional green fees. Call the proshop to take advantage of this valuable opportunity.
And as a word of warning, Houlton Golf Course will be hosting the regional qualifying tournament for the State High School Golf Championships for small high schools in Aroostook County. This will take place 9 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 26. As such, the course will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thank you for your understanding.
As summer comes to a close and fall takes over, come out to the course and play next ne holes. The temperatures will get to the seventies this week and we may see the trees start to turn colors. It will be a great time to enjoy the scenery. Still lots of time to get in some good golf rounds. Hope to see you on the course.
