SOUTH CHINA, Maine — The Aroostook Huskies football team endured another long road trip Saturday, Sept. 21, to face off against the Central Maine Eagles of Erskine Academy.
And just like last week, the Huskies came home victorious, this time with a dominating 48-12 victory. The win comes on the heels of last weekend’s 16-15 victory over the Berlin Gladiators.
According to head coach Taylor DeFelice, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first, but it did not take the Huskies long to respond. Quarterback Dom Poisson (Presque Isle) connected on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Zaylan Johnston (Mars Hill) to tie the game at 6-6.
Aiden Hanks (Presque Isle) scored a rushing touchdown from 10 yards out and also ran in the two-point conversion to put the Huskies up 14-6 before halftime.
In the third quarter, the Huskies erupted for multiple touchdowns to break open the game. “Dom threw for a few more touchdowns before turning the reins over to freshman David Hubacher, who came in and threw a few himself,” the coach said. “We added a rushing (touchdown) from Ilijaha Fortes as well. It was good team win against a Central Maine team that won the league championship last year. it was also the first win the Huskies have ever had against them.”
Poisson completed 10-of-20 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns, with two interceptions, while Hubacher completed 5-of-10 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Aiden Hanks carried the ball 10 times for 50 yards, with a score and added one catch for 10 yards. Ilijaha Fortes had eight carries for 50 yards and a touchdown and added four catches for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Connor Rideout had four carries for 20 yards and five receptions for 75 yards, with a touchdown and Zaylan Johnston had five receptions for 155 yards and three receiving touchdowns.
Defensively for the Huskies, Kaden DeMerchant had eight tackles; Colby Lavoie had seven, Gunner Hatfield had seven tackles and Damien Douglass had five tackles, one sack and a forced fumble.
The Huskies will look to continue that momentum Saturday, Sept. 28 when the team travels to Madawaska to face the Mustangs. Game time is 2 p.m.
