PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library has received a grant from The Pilcrow Foundation for 73 new children’s books valued at $1,200.76. In addition, two individual donors, Hal Berenson and Laura Ackerman of Colorado, donated an additional 24 children’s math and science books valued at $403.57.
To celebrate the book donation and showcase the books, the library will hold a small event with light refreshments at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, in the Children’s Library on the main floor.
The Pilcrow Foundation was founded in 2013 to continue the work of The Libri Foundation. Its mission is to provide new, quality, hardcover children’s books to rural public libraries across the United States.
According to the Pilcrow Foundation website, the foundation recognizes the importance of public libraries in rural communities. Libraries are often the center of the community, where people come together to learn and share ideas. Providing quality children’s books to rural public libraries ensures an opportunity for active engagement within the community and lifelong learning. Reading to and with children every day and providing them with frequent opportunities to read on their own are important activities for literacy development.
“Literacy is the greatest gift we can give to our children; the public library is where we can start,” the website states.
The mission of the Mark and Emily Turner Memorial Library is to provide quality materials and services in a comfortable, open environment. The library strives to enhance lifelong learning and personal growth while fostering a community connection.
