PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — In 2017 Northern Maine Community College received approval for the establishment of a practical nursing program to address the growing concern regarding the need to expand Maine’s long-term care workforce. The first cohort of 15 students from southern Aroostook will complete the program in December.
In October, NMCC begins a second practical nursing cohort for up to 32 students. Enrolled students will receive free tuition and course fees. Students who need prerequisite courses will be able to take advantage of a compressed schedule to meet the general education requirements. Students who have already completed general education courses will begin the required nursing courses in March.
This program is offered on the NMCC campus and is funded by a Maine Quality Centers “Put ME to Work” grant with additional support from healthcare providers throughout Aroostook County.
This practical nursing certificate program is one of only two programs in the state of Maine and the only program offered at a public college.
