CARIBOU, Maine — Five candidates, including two incumbents, are vying for a three-year seat on Caribou City Council.
New candidates are Roger Felix, Milo Haney and Douglas Morrell. David Martin and Joan Theriault, who currently sit on the council, have entered the race for another term.
In addition to council, Tanya Sleeper and Pamela Murchson are running for a seat on the RSU 39 (Caribou and Stockholm) board of education and Athill Hebert is running for a seat on the Jefferson Cary Memorial Hospital Fund.
The Caribou referendum will also include a single local question, asking if voters will approve RSU 39 issuing bonds for the acquisition of a .6-acre parcel of land adjacent to the Caribou Middle School, and also demolishing buildings on the property for $175,000.
The question clarifies that this land will create additional parking space and also assist with excess snow removal during winter months. The space, which is next to the upcoming pre-K-eight Caribou Community School, would be used for parking once that facility is complete.
Caribou’s election, in addition to those of all Maine communities on Nov. 5, will feature two state questions. One question will ask if voters are in favor of a $105 million bond to improve “roads, bridges, railroads, airports, transit and ports and make other transportation investments,” which will be matched by roughly $137 million “in federal and other funds.”
The second question will ask voters if they support amending the state constitution so it allows physically disabled voters unable to sign their names to use “an alternative method of signing a citizens’ initiative or people’s veto petition.”
