HOULTON, Maine — The Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District was recently awarded a USDA Farm to School grant for their project, the “Mobile Kitchen Cart.”
The district will be partnering with Houlton Elementary and Southside Schools to provide nutrition education through the use of the “Charlie Cart,” an all-in-one, hands-on food education and nutrition program for any learning environment.
The Mobile Kitchen Cart project will combine farm field trips with in-class cooking demonstrations for grades K-5. As part of the grant, the SASWCD and project’s lead educator for Houlton Elementary School, Lauren Fitzpatrick, attended the 2019 Farm to School Grantee Gathering in New Orleans where they connected with grantees from across the country, Farm to School staff, and regional leads.
