We are thrilled to announce that our 10th annual Toast to the Animals was a smashing success and an amazing fundraiser for the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We experienced a tremendous amount of community support for this event.
Again this year we offered the options of either a $500 “Top Dog” or “Fat Cat” sponsorship. We had seven businesses and individuals step up, and 32 $100 sponsors.
Please check out our ad in this week’s paper for a complete list thanking our sponsors. Without their support, this event just couldn’t be possible!
This year’s music was provided by Heath Bartley. He did an outstanding job keeping the crowd entertained with many favorite songs. Once again the Presque Isle Inn & Convention Center did an amazing job providing great selections of wine, beer and appetizers. The silent auction featured 120 items, and brought in the lion’s share of the funds raised as attendees bid high knowing the money was going to a worthy cause.
The night also featured many door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. We want to acknowledge the Fraser Family for donating all their 50/50 winnings back to the animals.
Much of the funds raised are designated for the continued care of the animals, supplies for the shelter and special projects that are needed. None of the success we experienced this year would have been possible without all the volunteers who worked so hard to bring the event to fruition. We truly appreciate each and every one of you.
With the beautiful fall days slowly coming to a close, please take some time to prepare for winter. If possible, bring your pets inside during cold winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure they have access to non-frozen drinking water.
If pets cannot come indoors, make sure they are protected by a dry, draft-free enclosure large enough to allow them to sit and lie down, but small enough to hold in the pet’s body heat. Raise the floor a few inches off the ground and cover it with cedar shavings or straw. Turn the enclosure away from the wind and cover the doorway with waterproof burlap or heavy plastic.
Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice can irritate a pet’s paws. Wipe their paws with a damp towel before your pet licks them and irritates their mouth.
Antifreeze is a deadly poison. Wipe up spills and store antifreeze out of reach. Tips provided by the Humane Society of the United States.
Check out the shelter Facebook page for all the latest happenings and to see what pets are up for adoption. We are located at 24 Cross St., Presque Isle. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
Please be responsible: spay and neuter your pets.
