PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle Men’s soccer team celebrated their last home match of the season, battling a tough Maine Maritime Academy team who took the victory 4-0.
The Owls celebrated senior day for three players: Chad Bartlett of Bradley, Parker Thompson of Washburn and Allen Stanback of Salem, New Jersey. All were accompanied by Coach Alan Gordon, their teammates, family and friends.
Play went back and forth early in the match, with the Owls at two shots on goal compared to the Mariners’ four, until the fifth shot on goal by MMA was put in the back of the net, said UMPI Sports Information Director Mark Knight. UMPI would battle on the defensive end through the rest of the first half, not allowing another shot attempt the remainder of the first half.
Knight said the Mariners came out strong in the second half with an early goal in the 49th minute. MMA never looked back from that point as they scored two more goals and held the Owls to one shot in the second half.
The Mariners advanced to 11-3-1 and 6-1 in the conference, while UMPI moved to 6-8 and 1-6.
