PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The third annual telethon to assist Aroostook County citizens experiencing heating and housing hardships will take place tomorrow, Nov. 14, on local television.
Dubbed “Helping Hands for Warm and Safe Homes,” the telethon is once again being coordinated by three local organizations. The United Way of Aroostook, Aroostook County Action Program and WAGM-TV will partner for the day-long telethon, which will be broadcast on WAGM from 5:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The goal has been set to raise $60,000. The local dollars raised will be used to assist individuals and families in crisis. All funds will be administered by ACAP. Based on recurring needs in the community, organizers have expanded the program to include not only heating aid, but also safe housing assistance.
The daylong telethon will utilize over 30 volunteers from various organizations and businesses to take calls at both the television station’s donation call center and the ACAP Home Energy Assistance Program call center. Viewers are encouraged to call to donate to help raise funds.
Individuals needing assistance will need to apply and be approved for funds, and should call the ACAP offices at 768-3053 to make an appointment.
All households receiving assistance will also receive follow-up services from ACAP’s coaching staff, which opens the door to individuals and families to get help with financial literacy, budgeting, weatherization, energy conservation education, and even provides energy related financial incentives.
