CARIBOU, Maine – Several towns throughout Aroostook County saw significant snow from a storm that pushed through the region on Tuesday, sending cars sliding off icy roadways and canceling schools and community events.
Snowfall was much lighter across the remainder of the state.
Chris Norcross, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Caribou, said Wednesday that the storm brought a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain to the area.
The highest amounts were recorded in the St. John Valley, he said, with New Sweden and Van Buren receiving 7 inches of snow. Caribou received 5.5 inches of snow, breaking a record of 2.4 inches that was set in 1967.
Since Jan. 1, 37.42 inches of precipitation — snow, sleet, rain or hail — has fallen in Caribou, which is 3.53 inches above the normal value.
Presque Isle received 5 inches of snow on Tuesday, while Hodgdon and Houlton received 2 inches.
“In southern Aroostook, they received more sleet and freezing rain,” Norcross explained. “Most areas around Houlton received between two to four inches of snow.”
In Penobscot County, Old Town and Orono saw 0.1 inches of snow, while in Washington County, Topsfield saw 0.4 inches of snow.
