Blacksmith — S.M. Straight, who is employed in the blacksmith shop of B.C. Knox, probably holds the record for shoeing horses. One day recently he shod seven horses in four and a half hours in the forenoon and in five hours in the afternoon he shod 10 more.
100 Years Ago – Nov. 26, 1919
New bank — Andrew J. Beck, Arthur E. Umphrey, Issac Umphrey, Owen K. Stork, Harry E. Umphrey, F.F. Larrabee, Richard Porter, Everett W. Cary, Maurice Russell, Milford Crouse, John L. Woodman, George R. Umphrey, Daniel Chandler, all of Washburn, and Fred Sanders of Perham have made applications to the Maine State Banking Authority to organize a new bank at Washburn to be known as the Washburn Trust Co.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 23, 1944
Katahdins replacing Green Mountains — Katahdins are replacing Green Mountain potatoes as the most popular variety with Aroostook potato growers. Farmers report that their acreage of Katahdins exceeded their acreage of Green Mountains. Average yield of all potatoes grown in 1943 was 152 barrels per acre. The highest yield from any farm was 186 barrels per acre.
Firemen’s ball — The Caribou Fire Department’s 23rd annual Firemen’s Ball will take place next Thursday evening at the high school gymnasium. Music will be provided by Leo Poullin’s Swing Band. The dance is semi-formal. This dance is an annual event for the benefit of the local fire department.

Jr. League Earns Funds For Church — Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church has received a gift of $52.50 for its treasury from members of the Junior Lutheran League. The young people earned the funds by picking potatoes on Saturdays. The church also benefited from a Swedish Buffet supper which was held in the parish hall.

Charity donation — Patrick St. Peter of County Federal Credit Union recently presented a $4,ooo check to Shirley Ayer and Mary Harrigan, co-chairmen of the Jefferson Cary Yuletide Charity Ball. The Credit Union is sponsoring the Charity Ball scheduled from 8pm-12pm, Sat. Dec. 3 at the Caribou Inn and Convention Center.
Caribou native to head Illinois hospital unit — Caribou native Patricia Getchell has been named vice president of patient services at Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Lincoln, Illinois. A registered nurse, Getchell has been affiliated with Cary Medical Center since 1976. She has experience in medical and surgical departments, the intensive care unit and as a charge nurse in the emergency room. More recently, she was assistant director of nursing at the Caribou facility. Getchell holds a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration. She is the daughter of Garth and Phyliss Getchell of Caribou.
