To the editor:
At tonight’s [Nov. 21] regular meeting of the Caribou Planning Board, we greeted a new member, discussed a new business opportunity with a resident, began a review of a major business improvement, discussed several ongoing local issues, and reviewed the possible effects of expiring terms of several members of the board. A pretty normal evening, save for the departing members.
It turns out that, of a board of seven, three members have announced their intentions to step down at the end of December. That leaves the board with barely a quorum for meetings.
The Planning Board is tasked with the responsibilities of regularly reviewing Caribou’s zoning laws (and recommending updates to the City Council), generating and updating the city’s comprehensive plan, holding public hearings on, and approving (or not) proposed developments within the city, and offering guidance to the city’s code enforcement officer on his activities. The code enforcement officer also serves as our coordinator and primary interface with the rest of city government.
Given these responsibilities, the board is earnestly seeking citizens of Caribou who might volunteer to serve on the board. If you enjoy working with a dynamic group of folks interested in Caribou’s future; if you are interested in helping Caribou to grow; if you enjoy, sometimes, getting into the weeds on a development project; or if you would just like to try your hand at being part of Caribou’s governing boards, then think about applying for one of the upcoming openings.
The board meets monthly, on the second Thursday, and we may from time to time hold additional workshops. The time commitment is important, but not overwhelming. If you are interested, and I hope you are, you are urged to visit the city clerk’s office and pick up an application. The city council would be very interested in hearing from you. Thanks.
Robert White
Chairman, Caribou Planning Board
