Veterans receive early holiday gifts from American Legion

HOULTON, Maine — Once again, the American Legion Post No. 47 in Houlton has surprised elderly military veterans with a small token of appreciation for their service.

Jerry Riley,  a member of Post No. 47, came up with the idea of giving some small gesture of thanks to surviving members of the military who reside in area nursing homes. The purpose of the gift, a small lapel pin with an American flag with the word veteran on it, and a small patriotic bucket with miniature flag was simply meant as a small gesture of kindness.

Member of the American Legion Post No. 47 visited veterans at local nursing homes Dec. 11 to present a small token of appreciation. At Gardiner Nursing Home are, from left, Jerry Riley, post adjutant; Charles Griffith, Dean Mitchell, chaplain; Sasha Webb, second vice commander; Gene Ross, sergeant-at-arms; and Kris Watson, post commander.
