Disposing of natural Christmas trees

With the end of the year approaching, we would like to pass on some information about the upcoming holidays and what you can do with your natural Christmas tree.

Normal operating hours for the Presque Isle Landfill are 7:30 am – 3:30 pm weekdays and 7:30 – 11:30 am on Saturdays.  The landfill will be open on the morning of December 24th from 7:30 – 11:30 am.  The landfill will be closed all day on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

We also want you to know that landfill permit decals are now available for purchase at City Hall.  Call Lisa at 760-2712, if you have any questions. Landfill permits are for one year and are valid from January-December.

We often receive inquiries about whether Christmas wrapping paper is recyclable.  The answer is that wrapping paper is not recyclable and must be treated as trash. The mills that accept paper for recycling specifically prohibit wrapping paper.

If you are wondering what to do with your natural tree after Christmas, there are several sites where you can drop off your tree at no cost.  These include the Presque Isle Landfill, Gil’s Sanitation and Star City Sanitation.

Please remove all decorations from the tree and do not leave your tree in a plastic bag.  Note that the former Cunningham School lot will no longer be used as a tree drop-off location.

If you have any questions about recycling or landfill disposal, please contact the Solid Waste Division at 760-2712 or visit the Aroostook Waste Solutions’ website at www.aroostookwaste.com.
