The two-time defending state champion Southern Aroostook girls team have picked up right where it left off a year ago — rolling over the competition in commanding fashion.
The Warriors (5-0 in Class D North) are averaging 77.2 points per game through the first five contests, while only allowing 22.2 points to the opposition. Southern Aroostook and Deer Isle-Stonington are the only two squads in girls Class D North with unbeaten records so far.
Katahdin is 3-1 in Class D North, with its only loss coming at the hands of Southern Aroostook. East Grand (0-4) is still searching for its first win under first-year coach Andrew Cropley.
Hodgdon is also enjoying success as evidenced by the team’s 3-1 record in Class C North, while Houlton (3-2) is currently the top-ranked team in Class B North.
The following is a recap of games played through Thursday, Dec. 19.
Wisdom 48, East Grand 34 — At St. Agatha Monday, Dec. 16, Olivia Ouellette had 16 points to lead Wisdom over East Grand. Lily Roy added 14 points, Abigail Lerman had six, Kylie Pelletier and Savannah Hanlin both had four and Emma Chamberland and Colleen Thamsen each had two.
For East Grand, Madeline Cowger led the way with 11 points, while Jordyn Cowger added eight, Danlen Espensheid had seven, Faith Lindsay scored four and Emma Davis and Phoebe Foss each had two.
Wisdom led 20-6, 33-17 and 42-24 at the quarter breaks.
Hodgdon 72, Van Buren 20 — At Hodgdon Dec. 16, the Hawks rolled to the lopsided victory with a total team effort. Sabra Scott led the team with 10 points, Marissa Dow, Kylee Mooers, Sadie Thompson, Lauren McGillicuddy and Emma Drew all had nine points each. Allie Winship chipped in six points, Autumn Ganzel had five, Monique Polchies and Madison Smith both added two and Kaelyn Lawlor and Vickie Porter both had one.
For Van Buren, Brooke Caron had 10 points and Kylie LaPlante had six. Hodgdon led 16-2, 34-6 and 55-7 at the quarter breaks.
Houlton 44, Central Aroostook 33 — At Mars Hill Dec. 17, the Shires picked up an 11-point victory over Central Aroostook. Individual results were not reported.
Hodgdon 81, East Grand 29 — At Hodgdon Dec. 18, the Hawks received a balanced scoring attack in their win over East Grand. Marissa Dow led the way with 16 points while Kylee Mooers added 13, Sabra Scott had 12, Sadie Thompson and Lauren McGillicuddy both had nine, Autumn Ganzel chipped in eight, Monique Polchies four, Kaelyn Lawlor and Madison Smith both had three and Emma Drew and Allie Winship each had two.
For East Grand, Jordyn Cowger led her team with 11 points, while Phoebe Foss added 10, Victoria Gilman had four and Emma Davis and Faith Lindsay each had two.
Hodgdon led 25-3, 44-8 and 66-17 at the quarter breaks.
Houlton 42, Caribou 36 — At Houlton Thursday, the Shires held off a late rally by Caribou to pick up their third win of the season. Rebecca Howe led the team with 17 points, while Teagan Ewings added 11, Mia Henderson had six, Olivia Henderson five and Drew Warman three.
For Caribou, Taylor LaBreck had 13 points, Paige Espling added eight, Selena Savage seven, Renee Stubbs five and Kim Susu had three.
The two teams were knotted 7-7 at the end of the first period, but Houlton took a 17-11 halftime lead it never relinquished. The Shires led 31-20 after three quarters.
Southern Aroostook 82, Ashland 31 — At Ashland Thursday, the Warriors received a 22-point effort from Madison Russell in a win over Ashland. Cami Shields added 13 points, Paige Vose had 10, Kacy Daggett added nine, Madison Shields eight, Emma Nadeau seven, Makaelyn Porter five, Bre Daggett four and Callie Russell and Selena Botting both had two.
For Ashland, Willow Hall had 10 points, while McKenna Condon and Jamie Poulin both had six, Danni Carter added five, Kaitlyn Dotson four, Mia Carney two and and Hailee Cunningham one.
