100 Years Ago – Dec. 31, 1919
Lamb problems — Paul Bouchard, trouble man for the Aroostook Telephone Co., is limping around these days. Paul went into a barn in Perham looking for a ladder when he was suddenly the objective of a vicious lamb. He was knocked down and one leg was badly bruised. He got ahold of a pitchfork and kept the ram away until he could get out the door.
75 Years Ago -Dec. 28, 1944
Ice follies scheduled for New Year’s Eve — Exhibition figure skating, acrobatics and clown skating, are a few of the features to be presented at a winter ice follies to take place at the Caribou Skating Rink on New Years Eve, Sunday, Dec. 31. Mgr. Louis Hebert, who is sponsoring the program, said there would be no contest skating, but several novelty numbers will be presented during the evening, including the musical selections and acrobatics, as well as exhibition skating and races. The entire program will be put on with local talent. There will be no admission charges. Guests will have an opportunity to skate the old year out and the new year in.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 31, 1969
Toys for 512 tots — Toys for 512 children in 127 needy families was the Caribou Fire Department’s contribution toward a happy Christmas in Caribou. Firemen repaired , painted, or otherwise restored 1,714 items in the few weeks preceding the holiday, and delivered its gifts in time for Christmas Day.
Fire truck Limestone’s Yule gift — A Christmas present for the Limestone Fire Department is a $26,750 dual pumper which Albert Poitras, assistant fire chief, and Capt. Charles Cote brought home Sunday from Tipton, Ind. The new engine sports a water tank, which can deliver 1,000 gallons per minute, and a fire pressure fog tank capable of delivering 70 gallons per minute from its nozzle at 850 pounds pressure. The later will be employed in electrical fires, and is expected to save on water where conditions warrant. Equipped with an International Chassis, the more came from John Bean Fire Equipment Division of the Ford Machinery and Chemical Corp at Tipton. The purchase was made through Maine Potato Growers.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 28, 1994
Free tow service on New Years Eve for those who shouldn’t drive — In the spirit of the holiday season, Caribou residents can get “towed” this year if they’ve had “one too many” to drink. Beaulieu’s Garage and Body Shop is offering free rides home to those individuals who have overindulged at a holiday party, local bar, or other festive occasion. Best of all, says garage co-owner’s Jeff and Judy Robertson, “your car goes with you.” There is no charge, no questions, no hassles.
Holiday trees needed for recycling project — The Limestone FFA working with the Tri-Community Landfill will be collecting Christmas trees for a recycling project. Anyone with trees for pickup may place them along side of the road on Jan. 2 or 3. Trees may also be brought to the Limestone Community School and dropped off by the greenhouse.
