HOWLAND, Maine — The Caribou wrestlers now have 15 dual meet victories this season after claiming three wins during a Jan. 18 event held at Penobscot Valley High School and two victories Jan. 15 at Lincoln.

The Vikings defeated Ellsworth with a score of 60-18, Penobscot Valley by a score of 54-17, and Mt. View  of Thorndike by a score of 48-24. Caribou lost in a close match against Medomak Valley of Waldoboro, 42-39.

On Jan. 15, the Vikings traveled to Lincoln to take on Mattanawcook Academy and defeated the home team 48-30. The Vikings also won against Penobscot Valley, 66-18, but lost to Dexter, 45-36 and also lost to Piscataquis Community High School, 39-36..

Caribou High School wrestling coach Chico Hernandez said the Viking’s win over Mattanawcook Academy was possibly one of the greatest dual meet victories ever recorded during his time at Caribou.

“I knew right before the meet started it was a long shot for us to win, but we made our own luck,” he said. “[Mattanawcook Academy] has a half a dozen really good wrestlers that will probably dominate the Class B state tournament and the regionals. They recently beat the number one ranked team from the south region and defending state champions Wells High School over the weekend by 39-33.”

Individual wrestler’s results were not reported.
