HODGDON, Maine — For 18 years, the Hodgdon JMG program has shown its support and appreciation for local military heroes by hosting a Veterans Day breakfast ceremony.
But on Monday night, it was the veterans’ turn to show their appreciation to the Hodgdon JMG group. Representatives from American Legion Post No. 47 in Houlton presented a plaque to the group during halftime of a Hodgdon boys basketball game versus Greater Houlton Christian Academy.
Each November, the Hodgdon JMG program serves a free breakfast featuring a meal of eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and more to area veterans and their families. The Hodgdon High School band performs musical selections while the high school and elementary school choruses perform vocal numbers.
It is estimated that the group has served more than 5,000 breakfasts during that time span.
The American Legion Post No. 47 presented a plaque and $250 check to the Hodgdon JMG program Monday evening. Commander Kris Watson and Adjutant Jerry Riley presented a plaque to Hodgdon JMG specialist Jason Little, along with several students in the JMG program.
“Every year, the Hodgdon JMG puts on a program that is quite amazing,” Watson said. “All of the veterans I talk to that attend really enjoy it. They welcome veterans from all conflicts and wars. We get a chance to get together, talk and renew old friendships. It is really a good time and we appreciate all they do for us.”
In addition, the Legion presented the group with a check for $250 to the JMG program.
“It was truly an honor to receive this plaque from the American Legion,” Little said. “Our JMG students are always appreciative of the opportunity to hold the Veterans Day Breakfast each year and to show respect to our local veterans and their families. It is one of our favorite events, with such a long history, and we hope to continue this tradition for years to come.”
