ST. JOHN VALLEY, Maine — The city of Edmundston, New Brunswick, has been selected to host the 2020 Jeux d’Acadie 50-plus. This will be the seventh games for those over 50 years of age. The games are friendly in nature and are comprised of cornhole, shuffleboard, bowling, swimming, bicycle trails, golf, walking trails, and so forth.
L’Association des ainees francophone (Francophone Association of New Brunswick Seniors) has announced the games will be held from Aug. 27-30, and invites participants from New Brunswick, Maine, and Témiscouata, Quebec, to the games.
“We are targeting between 350 and 400 participants for this event. This year, there will be a unique registration, that is to say that everyone can participate in one or more of the 40 categories planned. Participants will not need to be members of our association or any other club. Everyone is invited to participate,” said AFANB Games President Jean-Luc Belanger.
The committee has five components, namely sports, recreational, cultural, wellness and intergenerational for participants from the Atlantic provinces, Quebec, Maine and perhaps other regions.
“Our goal is to bring together several people from different regions and provinces. Currently, we are preparing the activities of the different components and our programming will be ready at the end of April,” said the two co-chairmen, Louise Guerrette and Luc Fournier.
“This will allow people to register with the AFANB and online. We will also launch our fundraising campaign soon to involve local people and help us organize a special event for our region,” the co-chairmen said.
“Edmundston has spent many years and efforts to promote physical activity and general health. We also have several sports infrastructures as well as several teams and organizations that represent our municipality in various sports sectors,’ said Edmundston Mayor Cyrille Simard. “We are proud to be associated with the organization of the Acadian Games 50-plus at home. It’s inspiring.”
The organization of the games will need approximately 100 volunteers for the event. To donate a few hours, those interested can speak to the Sports Pavilion or a member of the committee.
