HOULTON, Maine — Maine writer and former Houlton Pioneer Times contributor Annaliese Jakimides will join eight other artists and writers at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, for a reading event in Bangor.
The nine will read and present their work from the anthology “A Dangerous New World: Maine Voices on the Climate Crisis,” at COESPACE.
A resident of Mt. Chase for more than 25 years, Jakimides now lives in Bangor. Her prose and poetry have been published in many magazines and anthologies and broadcast on NPR and Maine Public. She is organizing the Feb. 12 event, which will feature live music.
The new anthology includes the works of 65 writers and 27 artists who responded to a call for essays, poetry, and art work on the effects of climate change — on their lives, their communities, their families and their futures.
According to Jakimides, “The collection is a complex mosaic of voices and visions, of thoughtful appraisals, careful observations, emotional responses and scientific analyses, sighting changes along the coast through the eyes of lobstermen and clammers, changes in the woods through the eyes of forest walkers and birders, images of natural beauty and its devastation through the work of poets, painters, photographers, installation artists and sculptors.”
Throughout the book, contributors share their thoughts and understanding of what can and must be done to conserve land, waters, air, forests and animals. Edited by Meghan Sterling and Kathleen Sullivan, “A Dangerous New World” is published by Littoral Books, with a foreword by Governor Janet Mills.
Proceeds from all sales of the book benefit 350 Maine, a grassroots movement dedicated to solving the planetary climate crisis.
