Maine Drug Enforcement Agency agents arrested three people in Topsham on Thursday on various methamphetamine charges after a monthslong investigation into the sale of methamphetamine from the Midcoast to Aroostook County, said Stephen McCausland, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Two of those arrested had ties to Aroostook County. Thomas Hammond, 21, of Fort Fairfield was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, while 29-year-old Danielle McBreairty, arrested for methamphetamine trafficking, was listed by DPS as being from Caribou (along with Glenburn). Justin Smith, 31, of Lewiston was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.
On Thursday night, agents located McBreairty in Brunswick. They followed her GMC pickup to Topsham Fair Mall in Topsham, McCausland said.
After McBreairty arrived at the mall with Hammond and Smith, DEA agents stopped the group with assistance from Topsham police officers. DEA agents arrested all three after locating methamphetamine and a loaded handgun in the vehicle, along with a locked backpack owned by McBreairty, McCausland said.
After obtaining a search warrant, police said they found more than 4 pounds of crystal methamphetamine — an especially potent variant of the drug — and a pound of cocaine in the vehicle. McCausland said that the total street value of the drugs was $60,000.
Hammond, McBreairty and Smith were taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on Thursday night.
McCausland said that the Maine DEA had been investigating McBreairty for months. It believed that she was regularly traveling outside of Maine to purchase “large amounts” of methamphetamine, returning to sell it in Aroostook County, Penobscot County and on the midcoast.
