HOULTON, Maine — The town of Houlton is the latest agency to shut its doors to the public amidst concerns about the coronavirus.
Town Manager Marian Anderson sent out a public notice Tuesday, March 17, saying the town office was closing its doors to the public starting at noon. Town staff will still be working, but no longer interact with the public on a personal level.
“After serious consideration, we will be making adjustments in municipal operations,” the letter said. “These adjustments will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and changes will be made as information and circumstances change. Our goal is to ensure the safety of our employees and our residents.”
The town office will be closed to the public through March 31.
“We will do our best to provide the services that you require,” Anderson said. “A drop box will be available at the town office for processing payments, submitting paperwork that needs attention such as building permits, registration needs and vital records.”
In addition, the town has closed the following buildings to the public: the Gentle Memorial Recreation Building, John A. Millar Civic Center, Public Works garage, Cary Library, Houlton Fire and Ambulance Department, Community Development Office, Code Enforcement Office and Assessing Office.
The Houlton Police Department building is also closed to the public, with the exception of the front dispatch lobby. Those with a non-emergency, such as wanting to file a police report, are asked to call 532-2287 for further information. Emergency needs should be handled by calling 911.
The town council meeting slated for Monday, March 23, has been canceled.
“We apologize for the inconvenience,” the letter said. “It is critical that we maintain a healthy work environment for our first responders so that they can continue to serve and protect our community.”
