75 Years Ago – March 22, 1945
Weaver promoted — Ralph O. Weaver, Jr., son of Mrs. Arline L. Weaver of Presque Isle, was promoted to first lieutenant at Camp Anza, Calif., where he was serving with the Transportation Corps.
He was commissioned a second lieutenant on September 9, 1943. In December, 1943, he was assigned to Camp Anza as Chief of the Processing Branch in the Operations Division.
Blue and gold badge — Sgt. Henry T. Myshrall Jr. of Washburn was awarded the blue and gold badge signifying membership in the 380th “Battle Mountain” Regiment’s 2nd Battalion, which received the Distinguished Unit Citation for its gallant stand in Mount Battaglia.
50 Years Ago – March 25, 1970
Presque Isle FFA won at Limestone — The Presque Isle Chapter Future Farmers of America won the Northern District Parliamentary Procedure contest at Limestone. Members of the team were Alan McIntosh, Don McInstosh, Glen Leach, all who presided, plus James Johnston, John Johnston, Gary Drake, Bruce Roope, Roger Drost and Greg Smith. In the Potato Disease contest, the Presque Isle team took first with David Voisine and Greg Smith on the team. Gerald Adams placed second with a 98 in the Rope Splicing Contest.
Easton’s first selectman — Darwin MacPherson, the son of Willis MacPherson who served for 39 years as first selectman, was selected as Easton’s first selectman for the ensuing year.
Spud Shufflers earned pins — The Presque Isle Spud Shufflers Square Dance Club held a pin dance Saturday night at the Zippel school. There were ten squares present. They earned the explosion pin, Kissin Kuzzins and the Blackout pin. Dancers came from Limestone, Caribou, Bristol, New Brunswick, Fort Fairfield, Houlton.
25 Years Ago – March 22, 1995
’Cat skier honored — Andrea Millhouse, a senior at Presque Isle High School, was one of 10 girls in the state to be chosen to compete on the Maine Selection Alpine Ski Team following a tryout at Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley. Millhouse went on to compete in the Eastern High School Alpine Ski Championships at Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire, on March 11 and 12. The competition capped off an extremely successful high school skiing season and career for Millhouse, who was earlier crowned the Aroostook County champion in the giant slalom and went on to place third in the G. S. and fifth in the slalom in the Class A state championships at Sunday River in Bethel in April.
Donation — Roberta Barnes, president of the Presque Isle Kennel Club, gave a $100 donation to Dick Gardiner, director of Presque Isle’s Community Center. The club used the community center for its obedience and dog handling classes.
Thanked for fundraising efforts — Brenda Dow was recognized at The Aroostook Medical Center’s annual meeting for serving as the 1994 Annual Fund chairman. Dow and volunteers from the community raised $45,000 toward the purchase of a transesophageal echocardiography imaging transducer (TEE). The TEE is put down the patient’s esophagus for ultrasound imaging of the heart. Outgoing TAMC board chairman Michael MacPherson presented her with a plaque of appreciation.
