HOULTON, Maine — Tom Zimmerman, head of school for Greater Houlton Christian Academy, has announced honor parts for the graduating class of 2020.
Teagan Ewings has been named valedictorian, while Kathryn Nightingale has been selected as salutatorian.
Ewings is the daughter of Joe Ewings and Angela Ewings, both of Houlton. She was inducted into the National Honor Society her sophomore year and has earned many academic awards as well as gold and silver Presidential Education Awards.
Ewings has also received recognition by the Houlton Rotary Club and merited ACSI Distinguished Christian High School Student in academics. Ewings participated in four years of varsity cross country, basketball and track and field, as well as three years of volleyball. She qualified individually for states in cross country and track and field all four years and finished in the top 10 in the 1,600m at the state meet for two years.
Ewings was the Aroostook League Cross Country Champion in 2016 and was also named an Aroostook League Scholar Athlete in 2020. She is also active within her community in various volunteer roles.
In addition to her volunteer work at Houlton Wesleyan Church, she has helped coach middle school cross country and basketball. She also has enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics Torch Run.
Ewings is currently employed at Walmart. She will be attending Husson University, where she will pursue a degree in physical therapy.
Nightingale is the daughter of Matthew and Heidi Nightingale of Houlton. She is a member of the National Honor Society and for her consistent hard work she has been recognized by the Houlton Rotary Club. She has received numerous awards, including Presidential Awards and was chosen for the ACSI Distinguished Christian High School Student award for Christian Service, Academics and Leadership.
Athletically, Nightingale has participated in basketball, cross country and intramural volleyball. She is a member of the East Hodgdon Bible Church and also attends the Houlton Wesleyan Youth Group. She has a true heart for others and loves to serve her community as demonstrated by her leadership role in the high school service group for the past four years.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family, skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and time at the lake. Nightingale is employed at The Brookside Inn and also works for Nightingale Farms. She will attend Thomas College, where she will pursue a degree in early childhood education.
