75 Years Ago – May 17, 1945
Frank Smith named head of Chamber of Commerce — At the meeting of the directors of the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce, Frank A. Smith was elected president. Other officers named were: Harold Bryant, vice president, and Ted Thompson, treasurer. Three applications had already been received for the office of secretary.
Beverly was named head of New England agents — At a meeting held in Boston, Verne Beverly, Aroostook County Farm Bureau agent, was elected president of the New England Association of Agricultural County Agents. Beverly has been an agent for Aroostook for the previous 22 years.
Six local High School boys qualified for ASTRP — Morton C. Bartlett, Arnold E. Carmichael, Patrick J. Hayes, George F Higgins, G. Arthur Perry and Vernon A. Tarbell passed satisfactorily examinations qualifying them to enroll in the Army Specialized Training Program following their graduation from high school. All the boys that took the test, from [Presque Isle High School], qualified. As a result of their achievement, they were given two or four 12- weks terms in some university or college.

Madore-Clark won couples bowling — Sunday night couples bowling was tied up at the Astro Bowl Lanes over the weekend. First three places went to Berry Madore and Paula Clark, Wendell Clark and Leola Helstrom, and Donald McQuade and Laurie Berry. Hi single for women not in the first three places was won by Elaine Desjardin. Albert McIntyre won hi single for the men. Women bowling 90 and over were: Paula Clark, 95; Leola Helstrom 93, 97, 95, 91; Laurie Berry 92; Elaine Desjardin 102, 96, 116; Chris Lavway 93; Bonnie Clark 92, 97; Thelma Parks 113, 101, 90, 93; Harriett Brewer 91; Jeane McIntyre 98; Rita Dumont 104, 93; Pauline Willette 92, 92; Shelby McQuade 90; Alexis Mador 100, 94.
Junior exhibition winners — Anita Sperrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Atwood Sperrey of Washburn, was the winner of Washburn District High School’s Junior Exhibition with a dramatic speech titled “The Sparrow’s Fall.” Orin McBreairty, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hampton W. McBreairty Jr. of Perham, who placed second with a humorous speech titled “Amy Junior’s Nightmare.” Winning third place was Molly McBreairty, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McBreairty of Perham. Fourth was Fred Flewelling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilmot Flewelling of Crouseville.
25 Years Ago – May 17, 1995
Electrification contest — Winners named in the Maine Public Service Company Electrification Scholarship contest were first place, $1,000, Bruce Higgins of Presque Isle High School; second place winner, $500, Carl Brauneis of Caribou High School; and third place winners, $300 each, Jon Poitras of Limestone Community High School, and Eric Landen of Caribou High School. The MPS Electrification Contest in its 44th year was administered by Nancy Jackson of MPS and Brian McDougal, electrical instructor at Northern Maine Technical College.
Valedictorian — Patricial Nelson of Fort Fairfield, the daughter of John Nelson Sr., and the late Robertine Nelson, a nursing student at the University of Maine class of 1995, was named Valedictorian by University of Maine President Frederick E. Hutchinson. Nelson achieved a 3.98 grade point average in her four years at UMaine.
