Arts center offers mindfulness camps

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine—Wintergreen Arts Center is offering Summer Mindfulness Camps with instructor Sharmon Clark, which are designed to help children bring a sense of calm to an increasingly anxious world.

Beginning June 15, three consecutive weeks of Mindfulness Camps are scheduled to meet for one-and-a-half-hour classes on Monday through Thursday morning.  Topics include mindful breathing, heartfulness, and mindful movement.

Clark is a second-grade teacher at Pine Street Elementary School in Presque Isle, where she uses the Mindful School curriculum in her classroom.  She also hosts Finding Calm, a Facebook page geared towards children and adults.

“Mindfulness is being intentional and paying attention to what’s happening in the present moment — right here, right now,” said Clark.  “It’s learning how to be still and quiet while focusing on only one thing.  It is a tool children and adults may use to bring calmness and peace into their lives.”

Mindfulness Camps are a new addition to Wintergreen’s Summer Arts Camps programming.

Dottie Hutchins, executive director, said, “Children have been especially impacted by the stressful situation surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and I feel Sharmon’s positive, kind approach through Mindfulness is a great addition to our summer programming.”

Kindergarten through third grade will meet from 9-10:30 a.m. and fourth through eighth grade  will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
