CARIBOU, Maine —A fight between two brothers ended in an accidental gunshot wound after a Mars Hill man tried to intervene with a handgun, police said.
When a fight broke out on July 23 between Michael Neece, 61, of Presque Isle and Joseph Neece, 53, of Caribou, another man — Noah Johnston, 21 — tried to intervene and allegedly brought a handgun. Someone knocked the gun out of Johnston’s hands, and Michael Neece picked up the weapon and accidentally shot himself in the foot while trying to apply the safety, police said.
Caribou Fire and Ambulance transported Neece to Cary Medical Center, and he was subsequently taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for his injuries.
No one else was injured during the fight.
Officers Philip McDonough and Erick Bechtel are currently investigating the case with assistance from the Maine State Police and Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
As of July 27, there were no charges lodged against any of the men involved.
