HOULTON, Maine — It may be a bit later than usual, but the eighth annual Aaron Henderson Memorial softball tournament will return this summer.
Traditionally held in July, this year’s softball tournament was put on hold for several weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of teams participating has also fluctuated considerably.
“It has been very difficult planning with COVID-19, but Marie Carmichael [Houlton’s Recreation Director] has been wonderful through all of my planning to make this event happen,” said event organizer Brad Fredericks. “Since June I bet her and I have messaged back and forth every other day.
“We have done everything the town and rec department has asked. I have a permit from Houlton PD. I have event insurance and have waivers in place. At the raffle table there will be a form for families that would like to watch the event to sign for tracking purposes.”
Held at Houlton Community Park, the event will not feature any guest speakers as has traditionally been the case. Fredericks said he does have something special planned for the opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
This year’s coed tournament features 12 teams, down from the original number of 22 interested teams. While the number of teams may be less, and the amount of advanced fundraising was also affected, Fredericks hopes for a strong turnout. Last year’s event raised $7,210 for the Green Beret Foundation.
“This event is in memory of a man and hero we all miss very much,” Fredericks said. “All the money raised is donated to the Green Beret Foundation in Aaron’s honor.”
To keep game’s moving, the format was changed to a one-pitch event. Teams must also have three women on the field at all times.
Because of the coronavirus, a number of restrictions have been placed on participants. For example, bleachers will be removed and spectators are asked to bring their own chairs or blankets, or watch from vehicles.
Players will be able to use the dugouts during their respective games, but must wear facemasks. Masks are not required while on the field. Spectators are also asked to wear masks. The traditional handshake at the end of each game has been suspended.
Hand sanitizer stations will be set up at various spots around the field.
In addition to the softball tourney, a corn hole event will take place starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Greater Houlton Christian Academy will also have a food bus on site and a number of items will be raffled throughout the event.
