115 Years Ago – Aug.  23, 1905

Fire – – The New Sweden Starch Company’s saw and shingles mills in New Sweden caught fire at midnight on Friday and were a total loss. The separate grist mill also burned in the fire.

   100 Years Ago – Aug.  26, 1920

Rooms — The rooms over the dry goods store of Ray N.L. Brown are being remodeled, and will be occupied by Mr. Brown for his steadily increasing business.

75 Years Ago – Aug.  23, 1945

Penicillin, world’s newest wonder drug — A limited supply of penicillin, only recently released by the Army for civilian use, is now available at the Cary Memorial Hospital for use in emergencies.

50 Years Ago – Aug.  26, 1970

Slingshot Gloria Jordan of Washburn received the Grand Champion Award in the lightweight division of the 4-H Baby Beef Competition during Fair Week for her Hereford, Slingshot. The animal, weighing 900 pounds, brought the high bid of the annual 4-H Baby Beef Auction, at 81 cents per pound, or $279, from Sal-Mor Farms Inc., Presque Isle.

25 Years Ago – Aug. 23, 1995

Umphrey attends FFA conference Nicki Umphrey of Washburn, state president of the Maine FFA Association, was one of the state FFA officers who attended the 28th annual FFA State President’s Conference in the nation’s capital. More than 100 young men and women gathered July 24-29 in Washington, D.C., for a training and learning experience that included  Congressional visits and visits to major sights around the area. Umphrey is the daughter of Lynn Umphrey of Washburn.
