FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation department recently purchased and installed new backboards and basket rims, a much-needed improvement for the community center basketball court.
Parks and Recreation director Kevin Senal noted that the former backboards and rims dated back to 1952, when the community center was first built. He said that this is the first major upgrade for the recreation program since renovations to the community pool in 2007.
“The rims were stiff double rims that were frustrating for a lot of shooters,” Senal said. “With these new break-away rims and padded backboards, the game of basketball is safer for anyone that plays in our gymnasium.”
Fort Fairfield’s community center has been closed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the rims and backboards are two of many improvements that the Parks and Recreation Department has planned.
The department also will install two new drinking fountains with water bottle filling stations, and recently installed new scoreboards with help from donors Katahdin Trust Company and County Federal Credit Union.
Community members have been enthusiastic about the latest upgrades, Senal noted. He hopes that once people can use the community center again they’ll take even more pride in what the space has to offer.
“We want our residents to be thankful and proud of the amenities available to them,” Senal said. “These small improvements will hopefully have a positive impact on our community spirit.”
