Accepted new position — C. V. Chandler, who for a number of years has been connected with the Houlton branch of Swift and Co., has resigned and accepted a position with the accounting dept. of the Houlton Water Co.
Buying trip— Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sincock, accompanied by Miss Duff, left by auto Saturday for Boston to purchase Fall goods.
75 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1945
New faces — There are three new additions on Ricker’s faculty. Harold A. Wiggin, business administration. Miss Ella Rose Junes, chemistry and mathematics. Miss Muriel Murphy, dietitian.
Four new potato houses — Houlton’s potato storage facilities for the 1945 crop will be increased by some 86,000 barrels if the four new potato houses now in the process of construction here are completed in time to receive this year’s crop, a survey made this week revealed. The largest structure is that being erected by Harry M. Shaw at the C.P. station on the site of the house that was destroyed by fire last year.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 2, 1970
Promoted to manager — Oscar L. Burton, operational manager for the Houlton office of the Dead River Oil Company, has been promoted to manager of the oil division at Houlton. Mr. Burton succeeds Foster Gordon, who has been transferred to the lumber division of Dead River.
Expanding long distance — Work is underway on a $116,000 New England Telephone project to expand local and long distance calling facilities for Houlton and Littleton. Stuart W. MacKinnon, local telephone manager said, about 9.3 miles of cable will be placed along U.S. Route 1 between Houlton and Littleong central offices. ‘The new long distance facilities will be ready for service by the end of this year,’ Mr. MacKinnon said.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 30, 1995
State Police Scholarship — Victoria Dow of Houlton has been awarded a scholarship form the Maine State Police Memorial Scholarship Fund. This is the 13th year in which awards to students who are children of active, retired or deceased State Police officers have been given out. Victoria is the daughter of Lt. Colonel Malcolm Dow and his wife Susan. Victoria graduated from Houlton High School in June and is attending Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Gov. Angus King presented the scholarship in recent ceremonies in his office.
Potato bake — Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce board member Frank Zeman of Island Falls helped serve up hundreds of Maine baked potatoes during Potato Feast Days in Houlton.
