100 Years Ago – Sept. 8, 1920
First woman to register — The women of Houlton are registering very rapidly and all those who have not been to the Red Cross rooms for that purpose should do so at once. Mrs. Ellen A. Archibald, wife of Judge Archibald, was the first woman to register.
Promotion — Horace F. Pomeroy, a Houlton boy who has been located on Long Island in the employ of a Publishing concern, has been promoted to Western Manager and has moved to Chicago, where he will be located in the future.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 6, 1945
Traffic light — At a recent meeting of the Houlton Town Council, it was voted to erect a traffic light system at the intersection of Court and Military streets to provide better control of the movement of cars and trucks at that point. Subject to the approval of the voters, it is planned to place one beacon on the corner nearest the Hotel Northland and the other nearest the telephone company building. Each will have lights so arranged as to cover two directions of the flow of traffic.
Attends meeting — Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Rogers left Tuesday for Portland where Mr. Rogers will attend a meeting of Studebaker dealers.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 9, 1970
Safety award — Palmer H. Swales, vice president-operations and maintenance for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, presented the National Safety Council award won by the railroad to the road’s safety supervisor, Cecil E. Garcelon. The competition was for railroads working between two and five million man-hours annually during 1969. The B&A has also been awarded an E. H. Harriman Silver Medal, the railroad industry’s most prestigious safety award, for excellence in employee safety for 2969.
Wins bicycle — Terrence Cronkhite, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Cronkhite of Monticello, was the winner of a new bicycle during a sales promotion in the shoe department of Grant;s store at the Houlton Shopping Center. The manager of the department, Thom Black, presented the bicycle to Terrence.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 6, 1995
Receives award — Houlton resident Bob Hall received an American Hometown Leadership Award from the WalMart Foundation. For his selection, Houlton received a $1,500 economic development grant. One of 250 finalists nationwide. Hall has a chance to receive another $10,000 grant for the town. Cis Rhoda of the Houlton WalMart presented Hall with a plaque for his accomplishment, Town Council Chairman Michael McLaughlin and Town Manager Allan Bean assisted with the presentation.
Visiting nurses — Heather Bragan and Liz McGuire have been recently hired as medical social workers for Visiting Nurses of Aroostook, serving VNA clients in the Houlton area.
