NEW LIMERICK, Maine — Greetings friends. Labor Day weekend is over and the dreaded end of summer has begun. Yes, there is a crispness in the air in the morning, but we still have a lot of great golfing weather to look forward to. We will be aerating the balance of our greens in the coming weeks to prepare them for winter.

Last weekend we held the Babe Caron Memorial Tournament. The festivities began Friday night with a new feature, the two-person team, alternate shot, single club shootout. There were 22 teams that participated. The event was won by Ian Gervais and Lexi Emerson. They used a six iron with Ian’s drive and Lexi put her shot 30-inch from the pin, Ian tapped in for a birdie and they won on the first hole.

Congratulations to them and to all the participants. Saturday was day one of the tournament. Winners were Ray Mailman and Reggie Grant, who defeated Parker Brewer and Ryan Dee, and Brent and Randy Lincoln on the first hole of the playoff. They were at 8 under par. Brewer and Dee beat Brent and Randy Lincoln on the second hole for second place. The Lincolns took third.

On Sunday, with full handicaps, Daniel Peabody and Chris Cheney out distanced the field for first place at net 17-under par. Peabody shot his best lifetime score of one under par 71, and Cheney shot his best score on our course at 75. It was a pleasure to watch this unfold.

Second place went to the father-and-son team of Jerry and David York at minus-15. Third place went to Tammy and Doug Griffin, who outlasted Porter Gervais and Tony Marino and Logan Holmes and Luke Pollock in a two-hole playoff. They finished at minus-13. Congratulations to all the winners. Thanks to all players for keeping up the pace of the game and to all the volunteers that helped make this an enjoyable weekend.

On Tuesday, the Men’s Twilight League Championship was played between Bob Gray and Jerry York and the team of Manny Martinez and Mike Fleming. The later team struggled to get going as Gray and York opened a three hole lead after four holes. A couple chances were squandered and Gray and York were able to close them out after seven holes. Congrats to the league Champs. We’ll get you next year.

This Sunday, we will hold our popular Cross Country Par Three Tournament. Four-person teams will play all par three holes in a nine hole scramble format. You can call the proshop to sign up or come in and put you team on the list. All are welcome and singles and doubles will be combined or added to other twos and threes. It is a lot of fun and will give you a different perspective on our course.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, we will hold our annual Ryan Wright Memorial Scramble. This will be a two person team, eighteen hole scramble format. Come out and enjoy this new format for this memorial event for our longtime friend. Call the proshop at 532-2662 for more info.

The Lakeside Restaurant is open Wednesday thru Saturday from 4:30- 8:30 for fine dining on the shore of Nickerson Lake. They are also open on Sunday, 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM for Sunday Brunch. Delicious meals in a beautiful location. Call Aaron at (207) 805-5250 for reservations. Lakeside will be open through the end of our golf season.

As the weather cools, the golf course is a great place to get some exercise and maybe see some of our Maine wildlife. Enjoy a round this week and maybe I’ll see you on the course.
