LIMESTONE, Maine — Across the state, events, fundraisers and charitable gatherings have been postponed or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving many groups and organizations searching for ways to make up shortfalls. Ministries and churches in Aroostook County are no exception.
“This may be our only fundraiser of the year. We need to support it.” The sentiment of Artheline Bernier, a member of the St. Louis Church community in Limestone, is shared by many of her fellow parishioners and community members.
St. Louis Church, located on 100 Main Street, will host a harvest supper from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. The meal will include turkey and all the trimmings as well as dessert. Admission is $10 for adults, and $8 for children (12 and under).
The meal will be drive-thru, as participants will pick up their suppers at the right side door of the church.
“All proceeds will go to defray heating fuel costs with the winter approaching,” said Bernier, who is also president of the Ladies of St. Anne group at the church that is organizing the supper.
The story is the same 50 miles west at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Portage.
Looking for a way to ensure the church remains heated for parishioners, the church will host a harvest supper drive-thru of its own at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11.
The event will be held at the Portage Lake Town Hall, located on 20 School Street.
The meal will include roast pork, vegetables and dessert. All meals are $10, and all proceeds will go toward the church’s heating fuel bills.
Those interested in pre-ordering their meals can call Corinne Routhier, president of the church council, at 207-227-0819.
For more information about either event or to make a direct donation to help with heating fuel, contact the Parish of the Precious Blood, of which both churches are a part, at 207-498-2536.
