CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou girls soccer team defeated Houlton 5-1 at Caribou High School on Wednesday, after big offensive performances from two of the team’s players.
Vikings senior Edie Shea had the night’s biggest performance, scoring four of Caribou’s five goals, two unassisted. Caribou junior Gabbie Sutherland had assists on the other two, also scoring a solo goal of her own.
Caribou scored three minutes into the second half from a solo goal from Sutherland, making it 1-0. Shea added two unassisted goals with 21 minutes, and then 5 minutes left to make the Shires’ lead 3-0 at the end of the half.
The game remained static for most of the second half, with Houlton unable to get anything past Caribou’s senior goaltender Sage Dubay. Similarly, Emma McCarthy defended against the Vikings.
That changed with around eight minutes left when Shea scored her third goal of the day with an assist from Sutherland. The two repeated the feat a few minutes later, increasing the Vikings lead to 5-0.
Houlton’s Lydia Byron scored her team’s first goal with a minute left, making it 5-1 Caribou in a score on which Ariana Ardell recorded an assist. But it was far too late for Houlton to mount a comeback, and that ended up being the final score of the night.
Dubay ended up with six saves on eight shots while McCarthy had seven saves on 19 shots.
Shea said her team had motivated her toward her big performance. She believed it was the first game in which she had scored four goals.
“When I see those fast breaks, all I see is the goal,” Shea said. “And I’m just pounding it in there.”
Caribou Coach Mark Shea said his team had “clicked,” excelling on both offense and defense. He said this performance allowed it to withstand increased pressure from Houlton and put away the win.
Houlton Coach Marina Cameron said her team needed to work on having better communication on the field, along with passing and touches.
“It’s a learning opportunity, and we have a short season,” Cameron said. “So, we haven’t had much time to practice.”
Caribou is now 2-0 and Houlton 1-1.
