The fall sports season is in its second full week of soccer action, with several squads showing poise on the pitch. The following is a recap of games played through Friday, Oct. 2, that were reported to the newspaper.
Boys Soccer
Hodgdon 3, Southern Aroostook 2 — At Hodgdon Sept. 28, Hodgdon scored three first half goals — including two by Drew Duttweiler and one from Josh McGillicuddy — to take a 3-0 halftime lead. Notching assists were McGillicuddy and Elijah Matheson.
Southern Aroostook came roaring back in the second half with two goals of its own — by Dominic Grant and Conner Walker — but fell just short.
SA goalie Jacob Brooks made five saves on 15 shots and Hodgdon goalies Elijah Matheson and Kameryn Matheson combined for one save on four shots.
Katahdin 11, East Grand 0 — At Stacyville Sept. 28, Katahdin improved to 2-0 on the season with the big win over East Grand. Grady Ritchie led the way for the Cougars with two goals, while Wyatt Smith had a goal and two assists; Kyle McNally, Jacob Fitzpatrick and Josiah Rodgerson had a goal and an assist; Jacob Perry, Justin Hurlbert, Cole Chickering, Ethan Stewart and Kalan Mann each had one goal; Jalon Somers had two assists; and Wesley Richardson had an assist.
Jeffery Martin had five saves in goal for Katahdin, while Derek Golding had 40 saves in goal for East Grand.
Hodgdon 5, Katahdin 1 — At Hodgdon Oct. 2, played in blustery winds and a steady rain, Hodgdon freshman Oisin Gardiner scored his first varsity goal and finished with a hat trick on the day with three goals. Duttweiler added a pair of goals while McGillicuddy added two assists for the Hawks.
For Katahdin, Jacob Perry scored an unassisted goal.
Katahdin goalie Kalan Mann had five saves on 14 shots, while Hodgdon goalie/senior captain Elijah Matheson had three saves on six shots.
Girls Soccer
Hodgdon 2, Southern Aroostook 0 — At Dyer Brook Sept. 28, Faith Howland and Sabra Scott scored solo goals for the Hawks in the first half, while the defense preserved the shutout. Hodgdon goalie Madison Smith stopped all 11 shots she faced. SA goalie Jennah Brooks made 21 saves on 26 shots.
Katahdin 6, Hodgdon 5 — At Stacyville Oct. 2, played in a heavy rain, the host-Cougars picked up the win. Individual stats were not reported.
