CARIBOU, Maine — As the cross country running season rapidly comes to a close, local squads are staying busy on the hills and trails of Aroostook County.
In a Thursday meet at Caribou High School that featured runners from Washburn and Houlton-GHCA joining the hosts, the Vikings took home top honors in both the boys and girls meets.
The Caribou boys placed first with a score of 16 points, followed by Washburn at 35. Houlton did not have enough runners to score as a team. In the girls race, Caribou was first with 27 points, while Houlton was second at 32. Washburn did not have enough runners to score as a team.
Caribou’s Jordan Duplissie was the top boys runner, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 56.46 seconds. Viking Kayley Bell was the first to finish with her time of 20:34.
The race was run in wave starts, which had a group of 10 runners released every 30 seconds to accommodate for social distancing.
Houlton coach Chris Rines said he was pleased with his squad’s efforts. “We had some fantastic results at the race in Caribou as it was a repeat of our season opener,” he said. “It provided a good measuring stick of how much improvement our athletes have made over the past few weeks and should be a good predictor for what we can do in our League Championship/State qualifying race which may also be at Caribou.”
The Aroostook League Championship is tentatively slated for Saturday, Oct. 24, in Caribou.
